These mitts take their name from the cable stitch pattern that adorns the back of the hand. This cable is inspired by the seed heads of kangaroo grass, themeda triandra, a native grass that is widespread across Australia. Kangaroo Grass is our most prolific native grass and it holds an important place in the landscape at Millpost. In the spring its vivid green signals new growth, in autumn when the first frosts hit it burns a beautiful purple and in the summer and winter it dyes the hills a soft red. The Themeda grasslands like at Millpost would have formed the backbone of Ngunnawal and Ngambri economy, its abundant seeds provided grain for bread, large herbivores like Kangaroo and Emu feed on it year-round and the grasslands support tubers such as the Murnong and Bulbine Lily. Deliciously snuggly, these mitts are perfect for foggy mornings, rainy afternoons and dewy evenings to ward away the cold. Themeda mitts are knit in the round seamlessly beginning at the cuff, using your preferred method of small circumference knitting.
